Striker may be fit for first game against Italy

Oscar Cardozo could be fit for Paraguay's opening World Cup game against Italy after reports the striker could miss the tournament were dismissed. The Benfica hit-man, who scored 36 goals in all competitions for his club last season, has been hampered by an ankle injury over the past couple of months. He has been training separately from the rest of the Paraguay squad and it has prompted suggestions he may play no part in the World Cup finals. However, Paraguay team doctor Manuel Aguilar insists the news is much more positive and says Cardozo could even be involved in Monday's Group F clash with holders Italy. "I must clarify that Oscar Cardozo is not out of the World Cup, as has been implied in some media," said Aguilar. "What's more, neither has he been ruled out of the first game "Cardozo arrived with his ankle quite inflamed and damaged, however with treatment it has improved considerably. Everything's going well and the problem is now minimal."
