Boro youngster fails in race to be fit for finals

Australia manager Pim Verbeek has finally named his final 23-man squad for the World Cup finals. The Socceroos coach had to inform five players that they would not be involved including injured Middlesbrough defender Rhys Williams. The 21-year-old made 31 starts for the Championship side this season, often playing through the pain barrier, but will return to Teesside after finally losing his long-term battle with a pelvic problem. The other four players to be culled were Shane Lowry (Aston Villa), Tommy Oar (FC Utrecht), James Holland (AZ Alkmaar) and Eugene Galekovic (Adelaide United). However, the quartet have been invited to stay with the rest of the squad for the remainder of the World Cup. Squad in full Goalkeepers: Mark Schwarzer, Adam Federici, Brad Jones. Defenders: Scott Chipperfield, David Carney, Lucas Neill, Micahel Beauchamp, Craig Moore, Mark Milligan, Luke WIlkshire. Midfielders: Vince Grella, Carl Valeri, Jason Culina, Mile Jedinak, Tim Cahill, Brett Holman, Dario Vidosic, Mark Bresciano, Brett Emerton, Richard Garcia. Strikers: Nikita Rukavytsya, Josh Kennedy, Harry Kewell.
