Steve McClaren wants 'significant pay-out' to leave Derby

Steve McClaren’s days as manager of Derby County are ‘definitely over’ with Sky sources saying that the former England manager is refusing to walk from Pride Park without collecting some ‘significant compensation.’

McClaren and his agent met with club’s officials last week, with more meetings expected to be held on Bank Holiday Monday.

Sky Sports News HQ reporter Rob Dorsett says these latest meetings are “to thrash out an exit strategy, compensation, the terms of McClaren’s departure.”

Sky sources are reporting that McClaren “is adamant he will not resign as he feels he was part of a five-year plan and is only two years into that.”

McClaren is keen to continue at the Championship club although Derby were not happy with the way the season ended, as the Rams slipped from top spot in March to a final position of eighth.

They did not even make the play-offs after collecting just 12 points from their last 13 games.

Dorsett said: “The club’s owners believe that speculation linking McClaren to the Newcastle job was why the spectacular collapse happened, although McClaren refutes that and he wants a significant pay-off if he is to leave.”

Talks are expected to continue for a number of hours but Dorsett said: “What’s clear is that McClaren has no future at Derby.”
