Grayson: Let's finish the job

Simon Grayson has called for one last push from Preston after Joe Garner's hat-trick secured a vital 3-0 win against Swindon.

Victory leaves Grayson's side one win away from promotion to the Championship, but with MK Dons keeping pace just behind them, their passage is not yet secured. Garner struck twice before the break and had completed his treble only six minutes into the second half as the Robins never really matched their opponents at Deepdale. The final round of the season sees Preston travel to Colchester and boss Grayson is confident his team can get the job done. "We've said for the last three or four games now that our destiny is in our own hands," he said. "All we have to do is win the matches and get promoted. "For us it now boils down to a one game situation next weekend, but what we've done is testament to the players. "At this stage of the season to be 18 games unbeaten, giving ourselves a chance of promotion is fantastic and we are focused and determined to do that." Garner was named the Championship's player of the year last week and has scored 26 goals for Preston this season. "Hopefully next weekend is the icing on the cake for him and us," Grayson added. "He deserves everything that he gets but he will acknowledge the players he is playing alongside. "We've kept another clean sheet, so overall fantastic individual performance from Joe, but obviously the team ethic is the most important thing. We work hard as a team to stop the opposition from playing. "Next weekend we want another clean sheet and a couple of goals from somebody and we've done our job." Swindon boss Mark Cooper made seven changes to his side as they prepare for the play-offs and his new-look line-up struggled to cope. "We desperately want the play-offs to come round but we have to play these games," Cooper said. "I thought the young boys did really well. We played some young boys who have come through our system and we think a lot of them. "It is about us and how we want to prepare and our preparation for the play-offs making sure that the team that plays in the first play-off leg is prepared physically and mentally. "It might not work, but we've put a plan in place that gives us a possibility of doing well in the play-offs. "The fans have seen the next generation of players for Swindon Town. I'm proud to be their manager. "They acquitted themselves well in this cauldron. As a fan I would be proud. "We are not meaning to antagonise anybody. We're trying to do what is best for Swindon Town and that is to make sure that the team that plays on May 7 is fresh and ready to go."
