League Two leaders Burton remain five points clear at the top after a 4-1 victory at struggling Tranmere.

Damien McCrory put the visitors into the lead in the 18th minute and Lucas Akins doubled the advantage four minutes later.

Kayode Odejayi (35) pulled one back with a brilliant long range volley but Tranmere then squandered a 56th-minute penalty, Jon McLaughlin saving from Max Power.

And Burton eased clear thanks to a good finish from Nasser El Khayati (72) and an own goal from Adam Dugdale (89).

Despite the defeat, Tranmere remain out of the bottom two on goal difference, Cheltenham having lost 2-1 at home to Exeter.

And bottom club Hartlepool are now just a point behind Cheltenham and Tranmere, having beaten Mansfield 1-0 at home.

Brad Walker got the key goal, tucking away a penalty just after half-time, and Mansfield then had Junior Brown sent off just before the hour mark for a bad tackle on Walker.

At the other end of the table, second-placed Shrewsbury enhanced their automatic promotion hopes with a 2-0 win at home to Oxford.

The hosts went in front in just the second minute, Liam Lawrence converting a penalty after Jake Wright fouled Cameron Gayle.

Shrewsbury were reduced to 10 men when Rhys Sharpe was sent off just before the hour, having received two yellow cards within the space of three minutes.

But the Shrews held on to win, and actually doubled their lead when Lawrence scored from a free-kick with eight minutes left.

Fourth-placed Bury were 2-1 winners at home to Northampton while fifth-placed Southend were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Cambridge.

The battle for the seventh place, which represents the final play-off spot, is fierce, and two of the contenders, Plymouth and Newport, fought out a 0-0 draw at Home Park.

The point was enough to take the Welsh side into seventh because Stevenage lost 1-0 at home to Dagenham & Redbridge.
