Justin Edinburgh has been appointed Gillingham’s new manager after they reached a compensation agreement with Newport County to acquire his services.

Edinburgh, 45, replaces Peter Taylor, who was sacked on December 31, at the Sky Bet League One club.

He told the club's official Twitter feed: "I'm looking forward to the task at hand, its a step up for me and after watching the squad there is development here and the fan base."

Gills chairman Paul Scally added: "We interviewed Justin twice, he stood out as a Manager which would fit into the culture of the football club."

Former Tottenham defender Edinburgh took charge of Newport in October 2011 and led them into the Football League via the Conference play-offs in 2013.

County have since consolidated their place in League Two under Edinburgh and are currently in the play-off positions, a track record which has clearly impressed the Gills who are languishing in the lower reaches of League One.

Assistant manager Jimmy Dack was confirmed as caretaker manager at Newport ahead of Saturday’s trip to AFC Wimbledon, with first-team coach Wayne Hatswell assisting him.

A statement on Newport’s official website read: “The club would like to put on record our thanks for Justin Edinburgh's commitment and dedication during his time with Newport County AFC.

“Justin has left the football club in a far better position than when he joined and we wish him all the best in his role with Gillingham FC.”
