Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has revealed that midfielder Lee Cattermole will be out for another three weeks with a knee injury.

Cattermole, who has been out of action since playing in the 0-0 draw at Aston Villa on December 28, had tests on Friday that revealed he needs further time to recuperate.

The midfielder will now miss games against Swansea City, QPR, West Bromwich Albion and Manchester United.

Speaking to Sunderland's official website, Poyet said: “The news on Catts (Cattermole) is quite positive.

“He will be out for three weeks because sometimes with these injuries they go a little bit longer - when they do you fear the worst but fortunately he is going to be back in three weeks.”

The Sunderland manager did however have better news about defender Wes Brown who missed Saturday’s 2-0 win over Burnley.

He continued: “Wes trained for a couple of days and it is nothing serious. It is just about making sure he is 100% so that, when we throw him in, he is ready, because I can tell you that it is very hard.

“It is great for us because we now have a big squad and I can refresh the team if I need to, but of course the ones that performed at 3pm against Burnley will have a better chance next week.”
