Diego Costa has lost his appeal against an FA violent conduct charge and has been given a three-match ban that will keep him out of Chelsea's clash with Manchester City.

The Chelsea striker will miss his side's top-of-the-table Premier League clash against City at Stamford Bridge on Saturday after losing his appeal at a Football Association hearing on Friday.

The Brazilian-born Spain striker has been given the ban after treading down on the ankle of Liverpool's Emre Can in the first half of the Capital One Cup semi-final, second leg, at the Bridge on Tuesday.

Chelsea won that game 1-0 to complete a 2-1 aggregate victory.

Chelsea, who are five points clear at the top of the table, will be without Costa for Saturday's clash against second-placed Manchester City as well as for their games at Aston Villa and at home to Everton.

Chelsea had given their full support to Costa for the FA regulatory commission hearing, which was fast-tracked to be heard on Friday to ensure an outcome was reached before the huge match against City, which you can watch live on Saturday Night Football on Sky Sports 1 from 4.45pm.
