Roma defeated Empoli 2-1 after extra-time to book their place in the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia on Tuesday in a match which saw Ashley Cole withdraw with a nasty injury.

34-year-old Cole looked dazed and confused after receiving an accidental kick to the chin from Empoli midfielder Matias Vecino in the first-half, and had to be substituted.

Juan Iturbe put Roma ahead in the fifth minute before substitute Simone Verdi's 80th-minute equaliser took the game into extra time.

The tie eventually went Roma's way after Daniele de Rossi scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot in the 114th minute.

The victory ends a two-game winless run for Roma and was their first success at the Stadio Olimpico since the 4-2 defeat of Inter Milan on November 30 last year.
