Schalke general manager Horst Heldt branded the team's 5-0 home defeat to Chelsea in the Champions League "embarrassing" and "unacceptable".

The Royal Blues trailed 3-0 at half-time in their Group G clash, going behind in the second minute, and there was no sign of a fightback in the second half as the Premier League leaders heaped on the misery.

Home fans made their displeasure known at the full-time whistle and Heldt said they had every right to do so.

"In the first half above all we did everything wrong that it's possible to do wrong," he told Schalke's official website. "Even before going 1-0 behind we allowed them a chance and Ralf Fahrmann saved us at the expense of a corner.

"We put in an embarrassing performance, never went into challenges and didn't defend ourselves. Therefore we were deservedly thrashed.

"You can lose against Chelsea - they are ultimately a very good team - but the way we lost is not acceptable."

The loss saw Schalke drop to third place in the pool, two points behind Sporting Lisbon. They need to win away to Maribor in their final match and hope Sporting lose at Chelsea to progress to the knockout stage.
