St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright says they can't afford to go abroad like Celtic

St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright says the Saints will be staying at home in January - despite the postponement of their clash against Celtic.

Celtic boss Ronny Deila has exercised their right to delay one of their January fixtures – all Scottish Premiership teams are allowed to reschedule two matches during the season - and instead take his team abroad for a mid-winter training camp.

Wright admits St Johnstone cannot afford the same luxuries as the league leaders Celtic – although his side will welcome the time off during a busy January period.

"We will probably just have the weekend off,” he said. “The players have joked about us going away - but that won't be happening.

Celtic have the resources and the money to do something like this. But it's not something we would have looked at doing ourselves. Definitely not. We can't afford to.

“Celtic have the resources and the money to do something like this. But it's not something we would have looked at doing ourselves. Definitely not. We can't afford to."

Wright admitted he was unaware of the rule but with five games scheduled for January he said it will do his team no harm in having the weekend off.

The Saints must now focus their attention on Saturday’s game against Ross County, who are rooted to the bottom of the table.

A win would mean the Saints could leapfrog Patrick Thistle into eighth should the Jags lose at home in Sunday's clash against Aberdeen – live on Sky Sports.

"We are not thinking about losing,” said Wright. “It's a game to win and game that could help us move up the table. That's the only way we are looking at it."
