Jan Molby doubts whether Liverpool can replicate last season's title challenge

Former midfielder Jan Molby fears that Liverpool will struggle to repeat their second-place finish in the Premier League last season.

The Reds emerged as the main title rivals to Manchester City in the previous campaign, briefly seizing control of the race for the trophy before a late slip-up handed it to Manuel Pellegrini’s men.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have been unable to build on that momentum and last Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Hull has left the Merseysiders in seventh place, nine points adrift of leaders Chelsea.

Molby, who picked up plenty of silverware during his Liverpool stay from 1984-96, doubts whether the team can match last season’s lofty position, but still expects them to climb the table.

He told Sky Sports News HQ: “There is maybe four or five clubs certain to perform, which is the likes of Manchester United, Everton, Spurs.

“We are included in that and it’s just a case of who finds their form first. I don’t think we will ever see a Liverpool season like we saw last season, but I still think there is more to come from this squad.”

The current top four has taken on an unfamiliar look, with Southampton and West Ham among the early pace setters.

Robbie Fowler, another Liverpool hero, remains confident the team can force their way into the Champions League places over the coming months.

“It’s not quite clicked but I think we will do,” he said. “There is only Manchester City - maybe after a little bit of a blip at the weekend - and Chelsea who are on fire so it’s not all bad.

“I think we are not a million miles away and I’m very confident in the squad that Brendan has put together and his ethos, and his mentality.

“I think he will get it right. I don’t think he will - I know he will - he’s such a good manager.”
