Derby head coach Steve McClaren admitted his team got what they deserved when their 12-match unbeaten run was ended by Wigan.

The Sky Bet Championship leaders suffered their first defeat at the iPro Stadium this season as a brace from substitute James McClean clinched a 2-1 victory for the visitors.

"We didn't get going and Wigan came with a game plan and in the end they deserved to win," McClaren said.

"We have no qualms about the result and you don't get a result if you put in performances like that.

"I'm not so much angry about the result as the way we played. Credit to Wigan, they stopped us playing and I think we were too focused on the result rather than putting in a performance, we never played with freedom we normally do.

James McClean scored twice as Wigan came from behind to beat Sky Bet Championship leaders Derby 2-1 at the iPro Stadium.

"It's a big lesson because when you get up there you have to perform every week, you can't have an off day and we had an off day. In the end we got exactly what we deserved, we've got no excuses today. What hurts is not losing, it's the manner in which we did."

Derby had looked to be heading for a third win in eight days when John Eustace bundled in a free-kick in first-half stoppage time after his handball minutes earlier had given James Tavernier a penalty which was brilliantly saved by Jack Butland.

Wigan almost conceded a second when a Craig Bryson shot was deflected just wide but they stunned the home fans by turning the match on its head with two goals from McClean to claim their first win since August 30.

When McClean turned Roger Espinoza's low cross past Butland from six yards in the 69th minute, it was the first goal Derby had let in for 644 minutes and ended their bid to set a club record of seven consecutive clean sheets.

They conceded another in the 83rd minute when Butland could only parry a drive from Adam Forshaw and McClean pounced from eight yards to condemn Derby to their first home defeat since March.

Uwe Rosler saw his team repeat last season's win at Derby and he admitted: "Before the game, nobody gave us a chance but this was the best away performance since I have been at the club.

"We had complete dedication to the game plan, demonstrating that we are not a group of individuals but that we are starting to come together and be a team.

"I am so proud as to how they reacted as a group and I think the players have answered the questions in a very impressive way. James McClean didn't sulk, he understood the reason he didn't start and he came on and finished the job off."

Wigan's response mirrored the way Rosler climbed off the floor after he was knocked over by Derby's Johnny Russell in the first half.

"I think it will be shown tomorrow on Super Sunday and for the next 20, 30 years and will follow me into the grave! It was bad luck and nobody is to be blamed, I've no problem with it," he added.
