Sky Bet Championship: Brentford boss Mark Warburton blames officials for draw with Sheffield Wednesday

Brentford boss Mark Warburton blamed a linesman's flag for his side's failure to break down a resolute Sheffield Wednesday in a goalless stalemate at Griffin Park.

Bees striker Andre Gray thought he had broken the deadlock in the 10th minute when he side-footed home Spanish import Jota's angled cross, only to see the effort ruled out for offside.

But the match video revealed the officials got it wrong, meaning the Londoners endured a second consecutive goalless draw.

Warburton said: "It's difficult for them because they don't have the luxury of a video but two he flagged for were onside and that is frustrating for us.''

Wednesday boss Stuart Gray hailed his side's fighting spirit.

He said: "Not many teams will come to Brentford and keep a clean sheet.''

Brentford raced out of the blocks in the first 25 minutes, before the visitors worked their way back into the game to contribute to a thrilling end-to-end clash for the neutrals.

Gray said: "They put us under a lot of pressure but in the last 25 minutes of the first half we dominated the game and we created chances, but Brentford break quickly.

"To be honest how it's ended up goalless I don't know.

"We could have lost the game at the end when the lad (Nick) Proschwitz had a chance, but a draw is probably a fair result in the end.''

Gray, who made four changes to the side that lost to Watford last time out, added: "I'm delighted after a 3-0 defeat that we have got a clean sheet and with bit more luck we could have won the game.

"Brentford were well organised and they switch wings quickly and have pace up front, but they think like me that they just need a goalscorer.''

With a little more quality in the final third, this game could have ended in a six goal thriller.

Warburton said: "For 25 to 30 minutes we were excellent. It was the second end-to-end type game we've had this week but we have to be more clinical and we have to take our chances.

"We have come a long way and we have to keep remembering that.

"We have a squad that is fit and plays at tempo so you can't be disappointed after a performance like that, but we have to take our chances.''

"We believe Andre was onside when he scored and the video backs that up, but there is little we can do about it after the event.''

Wednesday's Stevie May smacked the upright with a snapshot volley from Chris Maguire's 36th-minute free-kick and Maguire himself went close moments earlier, his fierce dipping drive palmed to safety by Bees keeper David Button.

But after weathering a 15-minute spell of intense Wednesday pressure after the break, Brentford came into the game more and carved out a string of good chances that they were to regret missing.

Jota blazed over the Bees' best chance of the game when he had space and time at the far post after good work down the right flank from Gray.

And Bees substitute Proschwitz squandered two clear cut chances for the hosts right at the death as Brentford claimed their second goalless draw in a week.

"It is all about fine margins at this level, but we are creating chances and that is the main thing,'' added Warburton. "We will keep working to get it right.''
