Serie A strugglers Chievo have appointed Rolando Maran as their new coach following the sacking of Eugenio Corini.

The Verona outfit showed Corini the door on Monday following Chievo's 3-0 defeat away to Roma at the weekend, their fifth loss in seven league games.

Their dismal run of form has seen Chievo drop to 18th place, with just four points collected so far.

A statement from Chievo read: "Chievo announces it has handed the reins of the first team to Rolando Maran.

"Maran has signed a one-year contract with the club, with an option to extend it for a further year."

The 51-year-old Maran had been out of a job since April after being dismissed by Catania.

Maran is excited about returning to Chievo, where he played for nine seasons.

"This appointment gives me great joy," Maran said to www.chievoverona.it. "It's a double elation because at Chievo I spent most of my playing career.

"Now I return as coach and I hope to be able to experience again the emotions that I felt back then.

"I have decided to accept this job because having spoken to club president Luca Campedelli, I have found great intent and unity in what they want to achieve at the club.

"When you have these foundations, you are able to work well."

Maran's first game in charge will be on Sunday at home to Genoa.
