Ghanaian winger Kalif Alhassan scored four minutes from time to rescue a vital point for the Portland Timbers and a 3-3 draw with San Jose Earthquakes in Major League Soccer.

Alhassan equalised when he ran onto a loose ball in the penalty area and slotted a shot past home goalkeeper Jon Busch. Chris Wondolowski's second for San Jose looked to have won it earlier for the Californians.

Portland moved into sole possession of the fifth and final play-off position in the Western Conference, one point ahead of Vancouver, with San Jose eight points behind the Timbers.

Former Aston Villa, Birmingham and West Brom defender Liam Ridgewell was on target for Portland alongside Alvas Powell while Cordell Cato scored for San Jose.

Elsewhere, Justin Meram scored the first two goals and Bernardo Anor added a third to fire hosts Columbus Crew past Chivas USA 3-0 in Ohio.

Meram opened the scoring for the Crew in the 52nd minute, curling a strike around goalkeeper Dan Kennedy into the bottom-right corner.

He scored again seven minutes later after he intercepted a careless pass and Anor scored in the 80th minute with a header off Hector Jimenez's cross.

The victory moved the Crew into a three-way tie for third place in the Eastern Conference.

New England Revolution saw off Chicago Fire 2-1 thanks to a 60th-minute goal by Charlie Davies.

Sanna Nyassi headed the Fire into the lead in the 28th minute from Quincy Amarikwa's cross, before Diego Fagundez pulled the Revolution level, also with his head, four minutes before half-time.

Jermaine Jones then manoeuvered his way through the middle of the Chicago defence and passed for Davies to blast the winner for New England on the hour mark.
