Sky Sports understands Oldham defender Cliff Byrne is poised to rejoin former club Scunthorpe on loan.

Scunthorpe boss Brian Laws is looking to bolster his defensive options and has set up a deal to bring Byrne back to Glanford Park.

Byrne is a big fans' favourite at Scunthorpe having spent nine years at the club and captained the side prior to his move to Oldham in the summer of 2012.

The 31-year-old has found first-team opportunities hard to come by at Oldham this season, with his only three appearances coming from the bench - and Latics boss Lee Johnson is willing to send him out on loan.

Scunthorpe are believed to have agreed a loan deal with Byrne until January and the Irishman is expected to go straight into the Iron squad for Friday's clash at Southend.
