Manchester United first team coach Rene Meulensteen has been installed as the 5/2 favourite to succeed outgoing Wigan boss Roberto Martinez.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan insists the club aim to make an appointment within 10 days of Martinez's official departure date, with the Spaniard looking increasingly likely to take over at Everton.

New United boss David Moyes is thought to be keen on employing his entire backroom staff from Everton, with Meulensteen likely to be offered his former job as head of youth at the club.

However, the Dutchman is keen to try his hand at managing and Lancashire outfit Wigan could fit the bill, though their current assistant manager Graeme Jones is also in the frame for the job at 13/2.

Sky Bet's Chris Spicer said: "Initially, we made Meulensteen 7/2 second favourite for the job but he attracted the majority of the early money, edging him in front of Jones.

"We're keeping an eye on some of the outsiders, though, with Gus Poyet (12/1) and Paul Jewell (18/1) receiving plenty of attention already."
