Team of the week
Matt Duke - Bradford City
Both teams were already assured of a place in the play-offs and could meet again in the coming weeks, so it was an opportunity to size each other up and perhaps strike a psychological blow. Honours in the end were even, but Bradford had to work harder for a point after being reduced to ten men following the sending-off of Andrew Davies on the hour mark. Goalkeeper Duke pulled off a number of fine stops to keep the final score goalless, pushing away a Marlon Pack free-kick and also saving well from Cheltenham substitute Shaun Harrad.
Johnny Mullins - Rotherham United
Rotherham needed to win their final game of the season to guarantee automatic promotion and they sealed second place thanks to a 2-0 home victory over Aldershot which confirmed their opponents' relegation. Mullins helped the Millers remain solid at the back and also chipped in with the opening goal, turning the ball in from close range after a scramble in the box. He said: "I am just chuffed we got the end result we wanted, the lads are over the moon we managed to do it. It was an unusual season, topsy-turvy."
Chris Smith - York City
It was a tense afternoon at Dagenham & Redbridge as the threat of relegation hovered over both clubs, but York City emerged as 1-0 winners to complete an impressive escape after winning four of their last five matches. As well as helping the Minstermen keep a clean sheet, Smith grabbed the crucial goal of the contest when he dragged a shot past Jordan Seabright from 12 yards after latching on to a long punt forward by goalkeeper Michael Ingham in the 68th minute. The Daggers were unable to respond and were relieved to discover at the final whistle that they had also stayed up on goal difference.
Will Haining - Morecambe
Morecambe brought their campaign to an end with a 1-0 triumph away to Southend United on Saturday. They were on the back foot for long periods of the match at Roots Hall but Haining superbly marshalled the Morecambe defence to shut out Southend, making a series of important tackles and interceptions. An underwhelming campaign for the Shrimps ended in a 16th-placed finish, and it was confirmed after the match that Haining would be on his way out of the club in the summer after the two parties failed to agree terms on a new deal.
Michael Rose - Rochdale
Relegation-threatened Plymouth Argyle had more to play for at Spotland but in the end had to be thankful for results elsewhere for their survival after going down 1-0 to Rochdale. Plymouth showed plenty of urgency in an effort to break through but could find no way past Rochdale's disciplined defence. Rose stood out to take his place at left-back in our Team of the Week, and he came close to scoring a spectacular goal as he smashed a ferocious shot against the underside of the crossbar from 35 yards.
Alfie Potter - Oxford United
Oxford finished the season with a real flourish and, having beaten Rochdale 3-0 the previous weekend, they repeated the trick to see off Accrington Stanley away from home. Potter was a constant threat down the wing and set up James Constable for the opening goal on 64 minutes with a fine pass. Deane Smalley and Sean Rigg also found the target and Potter could have got on the score sheet himself as he fired a volley wide, while he was also the player fouled as Lee Molyneux was sent off to leave Accrington with just ten men for the closing stages.
Andrew Fleming - Morecambe
The second Morecambe player in our line-up is midfielder Fleming, who scored the only goal of their game against Southend to send his side into the summer break with a spring in their step. It was Fleming's determination in the 34th minute which swung the match in Morecambe's favour. He won the ball off Southend right-back Sean Clohessy as he attempted to usher it out of play, before rolling a low shot past goalkeeper Paul Smith from ten yards and into the back of the net.
Luke Guttridge - Northampton Town
Barnet were consigned to relegation after going down 2-0 to a ruthless Northampton side at Sixfields, and it was midfielder Guttridge who inflicted much of the damage with a goal and assist in the space of six devastating second-half minutes. Roy O'Donovan broke the deadlock in the 67th minute when he latched on to Guttridge's defence-splitting pass to beat Graham Stack from 15 yards. And six minutes later Guttridge doubled Northampton's advantage when he fired an angled drive past Stack after being set up by substitute Adebayo Akinfenwa, boosting confidence ahead of a play-off meeting with Cheltenham.
Jack Lester - Chesterfield
Playing his last game before retirement, 37-year-old forward Lester enjoyed a fairytale ending to his career as he captained Chesterfield and scored twice in a convincing 4-0 victory over Exeter City which left the Spireites agonisingly one place short of the play-off zone. He netted the coolest of penalties before tucking away a clinical finish and was then given a standing ovation when he was substituted 15 minutes from time. Assistant manager Tommy Wright said: "I think the players wanted to win it for Jack. It was great for him to score two goals and I don't think the script could have been better with him getting our first penalty in the league this season and dinking it like Panenka the Czechoslovakian."
Elliot Benyon - Torquay United
Torquay successfully avoided relegation from the Football League as a 3-3 draw with Bristol Rovers made it three games unbeaten at the end of the season, and Benyon was the star man with two goals in an entertaining encounter at Plainmoor. His first came when he turned in a Joe Oaster cross, and he again showed his finishing prowess to prod the ball home from close range. That looked like sealing victory for the Gulls, before Matt Harrold's last-gasp equaliser.
Jack Midson - AFC Wimbledon
Completing our line-up is the player who made perhaps the most significant contribution of the weekend, as AFC Wimbledon succeeded in beating the drop. The only side in the bottom five to win, the Dons condemned Barnet to relegation thanks to a 2-1 success at home to Fleetwood Town. It was Midson who had to take on the responsibility of scoring the decisive late penalty after a foul on Curtis Osano and he kept his cool to calmly slot home. He said: "If you look at what the club has achieved, to drop back into non-league would have been devastating."
