Stuart Tomlinson - Burton Albion

Matt Paterson may have stolen the headlines for Burton with a stunning winner against Rochdale but Tomlinson played an equally important part with an assured performance in goal. As well as keeping a clean sheet with a number of solid stops, the keeper earned some unusual praise from assistant boss Kevin Summerfield, who said Tomlinson's ability to 'kick the ball so far up the pitch' kept the pressure on their opponents.

Shaun Beeley - Fleetwood Town

Fleetwood produced one of the performances of the weekend to demolish Morecambe 4-0 away from home, but as well as the eye-catching attacking play, their defence was also rock solid. Micky Mellon's side have conceded just two goals so far in League Two and right-back Beeley, who has been one of the unsung heroes, was again impressive against Morecambe.

Ryan Cresswell - Southend United

Southend proved too strong for Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday as they cruised to a 3-1 victory, with defender Cresswell scoring their final goal with a well-taken volley from 14 yards. The result lifted the Shrimpers into mid-table and they will be hoping to push on against Cheltenham next time out.

Aaron Downes - Torquay United

The only goalless draw of the weekend in League Two came at Plainmoor, where Torquay extended their unbeaten start to the new season following a stalemate against Plymouth. The Gulls have managed just one win from five so far but there is nothing wrong with their defence and Downes has struck up a fine partnership with Brian Saah at centre-back, having again provided a number of crucial blocks and interceptions in the latest outing.

Joe Widdowson - Northampton Town

Northampton have been going well during the early part of the season and Widdowson has settled quickly following a summer switch from Rochdale. The 23-year-old left-back helped the Cobblers shut out AFC Wimbledon in a 2-0 victory and his willingness to get forward was rewarded when he played a part in setting up Alex Nicholls' opener.

Barry Nicholson - Fleetwood Town

Nicholson is another player enjoying life at a new club following a summer switch and he got in on the act against Morecambe on Saturday with the final goal in a 4-0 triumph. The midfielder found the target six minutes from time when he rushed into the area to head Jon Parkin's cross past Barry Roche.

Matt Lecointe - Plymouth Argyle

The 17-year-old did not start Saturday's game against Torquay but impressed manager Carl Fletcher with his maturity after coming on in midfield. The versatile youngster showed good technical ability to help Plymouth get hold of the game and press forward in the closing stages, even if the match did finish goalless.

Jack Payne - Gillingham

Gillingham kept their noses in front at the top of the division thanks to a 3-1 victory away to Barnet. Midfielder Payne made the all-important breakthrough after 10 minutes as he collected a long throw before drilling a powerful strike past a motionless Graham Stack.

Tom Pope - Port Vale

Rotherham may have been left wondering what they had done to upset Pope after the striker tormented his former club with a four-star display on Saturday. Pope scored just four times in 53 games during a stint with the Millers earlier in his career and managed to match that tally in one afternoon for Port Vale with a devastating display of finishing in a 6-2 home win.

Jon Parkin - Fleetwood Town

Parkin finally announced himself to the Fleetwood fans with a clinical hat-trick against Morecambe, having failed to score in his first four games for the club after arriving on a free transfer in the summer. He pounced on a mistake to fire Fleetwood in front, showed his aerial prowess by heading in a second and then finished from Andy Mangan's pass to complete his treble.

Jamie Cureton - Exeter City

Exeter's bid to bounce back up to League One gathered pace over the weekend with a fourth successive win, and Cureton was undoubtedly the star of the show with two goals and an inspirational all-round performance as Oxford United went down 4-2. He may now be 37 but Cureton was far too sharp for the Oxford defence and his opener was special as he drove towards goal from 40 yards out before blasting powerfully past Ryan Clarke.
