England expectations

We look at how far England are expected to go in Brazil and who is expected to feature in Roy Hodgson's starting line-up

Andros Townsend: 5/4 to start England's first game of the World Cup

The majority of Sky Sports readers believe England will be eliminated from next year's World Cup at the quarter-final stage, a 100/30 chance with Sky Bet.

A poll conducted in the wake of Roy Hodgson's men confirming their place at the finals in Brazil saw over 38 per cent of voters predict a run to the last eight.

Online bookmaker Sky Bet make the second round England's most likely stage of elimination at 13/8, while even failure to progress from the group stages is considered more likely than the quarters at 9/4.

England are 10/1 to get knocked out in the semi-finals, a fate over 11 per cent of Sky Sports readers have predicted, while Sky Bet offer 9/1 on a penalty shoot-out proving their downfall at any stage, as was the case in 1990, 1998 and 2006.

Meanwhile, over 10 per cent of voters have backed England to win the World Cup for a second time, though they're outsiders in the betting at 22/1, with host nation Brazil the 100/30 favourites.

Sky Bet offer a range of specials on the Three Lions, including 150/1 on Hodgson's troops beating Germany in the final while over 75 players have been given odds on making the final 23-man squad.

Punters can also bet on who will start England's first group game, with the draw to be made on December 6, but under-fire goalkeeper Joe Hart is 1/6 to retain his number one spot for the tournament.

Tottenham winger Andros Townsend is 5/4 to start the first game on the back of announcing himself on the international stage impressively, while dynamic trio Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck are expected to get the nod up front.

Both full-back spots have attracting speculation with Leighton Baines impressing on the left in Ashley Cole's absence, while Kyle Walker and Chris Smalling played a game apiece in Glen Johnson's absence.

However, the bookies expect Cole and Johnson to be in the opening starting XI, with Baines 9/4 to retain his place and Walker 11/8 to be favoured again.
