Lee Tomlin: Bagged a brace as Peterborough picked up their first win of 2012
Team of the week
Scott Flinders - Hartlepool United
Hartlepool kept their play-off dreams alive on Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Notts County. Neale Cooper's men have now suffered just one defeat in seven, conceding only three times during that run. Flinders has formed the base of their watertight defence and the Pools keeper was in fine form again over the weekend. He helped to keep County at bay and hammer what proved to be the final nail into the coffin of former Magpies boss Martin Allen.
Carlos Edwards - Ipswich Town
Ipswich, having suffered an alarming wobble, have collected 12 points from their last four Championship fixtures to pull clear of relegation danger. Their latest success came on home soil, with high-flying Cardiff swept aside with consummate ease. Edwards formed part of a back four that comfortably dealt with the Bluebirds' attacking threat, while he also provided a pinpoint cross for Michael Chopra to score against his former employers.
Darren Purse - Plymouth Argyle
Plymouth, who have endured more than their fair share of troubles in the last couple of years, continue to edge their way towards safety in League Two. They are now up to 21st in the standings, three points clear of the drop zone. A 4-0 victory over Accrington on Saturday has offered them a little breathing space, with experienced centre-half Purse playing a starring role as the Pilgrims claimed a notable scalp.
Sean Clohessy - Southend United
There is no separating Southend and Cheltenham at the top of League Two right now, with the two clubs locked together on 59 points and boasting a goal difference of plus 20. It is, however, the Shrimpers who sit at the top of the pile, with a narrow 1-0 victory over Crewe having seen them to the summit. Clohessy played his part in helping to secure an important shutout, with Southend having gone six games without a clean sheet heading into the weekend.
Daniel Powell - MK Dons
A run of five games without a victory had threatened to undermine the MK Dons' promotion push in League One, but they returned to winning ways in some style during a home date with Oldham. The Dons netted five times without reply against the Latics, with a four-goal salvo in the second half seeing them pick up a convincing success. Powell proved to be their chief tormentor, with the highly-rated forward bagging himself a brace.
Adam Clayton - Leeds United
Neil Warnock was appointed as Leeds' new boss on Saturday morning and he was in the stands to see his new side face Yorkshire rivals Doncaster at Elland Road. He was less than impressed by the Whites' first-half showing against Rovers but, having delivered a rousing teamtalk at the interval, saw the tie turned on its head in a thrilling second 45. Leeds struck three times to snatch all three points, with Clayton having hauled them level before Luciano Becchio grabbed the most dramatic of winners.
Gary Jones - Rochdale
Rochdale clambered off the foot of the third tier table with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Bournemouth. They remain four points from safety, but they have at least given themselves renewed hope in their efforts to clamber away from trouble. Club captain Jones led by example on Saturday, with the midfielder displaying nerves of steel. Just when it appeared as though the spoils would be shared at Dean Court, he stepped up to slot home a stoppage-time penalty.
Lee Tomlin - Peterborough United
Peterborough finally collected their first victory of 2012 on Saturday, with a 3-0 win over struggling Bristol City offering welcome relief to all of those connected with the London Road outfit. The Posh looked anything but a side short on confidence against the Robins, with Tomlin inspiring them to a commanding success. He netted seven minutes into the contest and six minutes from time to ensure that Darren Ferguson's side would collect all three points.
Lee Martin - Ipswich Town
Ipswich forward Martin has not always seen eye-to-eye with manager Paul Jewell this season, but he showed on Saturday just what he is capable of when in the right frame of mind. The former Manchester United trainee ran Cardiff ragged at Portman Road and was rewarded with a two-goal haul. He opened the scoring on 21 minutes and poked home Ipswich's third 17 minutes from time to wrap up an impressive win.
Ched Evans - Sheffield United
Evans grabbed a deadly double in Sheffield United's 2-1 win over Preston, but things could have been even better for the Wales international. He will feel that he should have collected the match ball in that contest, with Lilywhites keeper Thorsten Stuckmann having kept out his weak first-half penalty. As it happens he was not left to rue his failure from 12 yards, with two well-taken goals, including an 83rd-minute winner, seeing the Blades to an 11th win in 13 outings.
Chris Martin - Crystal Palace
A six-match run without a win has done little for Crystal Palace's hopes of forcing their way into the Championship play-off picture, but they were able to start moving in the right direction again over the weekend. Draws have proved to be something of a problem for the Eagles of late, but they gave Watford no chance of taking something from their latest outing. Palace crushed the Hornets 4-0 at Selhurst Park, with on-loan striker Martin netting either side of the interval to help them over the line.
