Beckham: Won his 100th cap in 2008
England take on France on Wednesday in a friendly at Wembley. The two countries have met 27 times, with England triumphant on 16 occasions - although they have won only once in the last five clashes. Here, skysports.com looks at previous meetings between the teams.
France 1 England 0, March 2008:
Fabio Capello's second match in charge brought a first defeat and will be remembered mostly for David Beckham's 100th England cap. The game itself was a disappointing affair from an England point of view, with Franck Ribery netting the only goal from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute after David James had brought down Nicolas Anelka. A second-half appearance for Michael Owen was his most recent appearance in an England shirt.
France 2 England 1, Euro 2004:
England appeared to be on course for victory in their opening group game in Lisbon when Frank Lampard put them ahead in the first half. David Beckham then failed to score from the penalty spot after Wayne Rooney was hacked down and the miss proved costly thanks to Zinedine Zidane's injury-time double. The former Real Madrid player equalised with a free-kick after Emile Heskey needlessly gave away a foul. Steven Gerrard then attempted a dangerous back-pass to David James, who brought down Thierry Henry, and Zidane converted the penalty.
France 1 England 1, September 2000:
England had just endured a miserable Euro 2000 campaign, where they failed to qualify for the knockout stages. France, in contrast, had won the tournament after defeating Italy in the final. Michael Owen scored a late equaliser after Emmanuel Petit had put the hosts ahead in the friendly at the Stade de France. But manager Kevin Keegan resigned the following month after losing a World Cup qualifier against Germany at Wembley.
England 0 France 2, February 1999:
Nicolas Anelka was one step away from becoming the first foreign player to claim a hat-trick against England in England when he scored twice and hit the crossbar. The Wembley friendly was overseen by Howard Wilkinson, with Kevin Keegan taking over a week later as the fall-out from Glenn Hoddle's dismissal continued.
France 0 England 1, June 1997:
Alan Shearer's 85th-minute goal saw England claim their first win in France for 48 years. The team, led by Glenn Hoddle, went on to win the Tournoi de France - the only tournament they have won abroad.
