Sabella: Argentina poised to confirm his appointment

Argentina are poised to confirm the appointment of Alejandro Sabella as national team coach and succeed Sergio Batista.

Batista had his contract terminated earlier this week following a disappointing Copa America campaign, where hosts Argentina were knocked out by eventual winners Uruguay at the quarter-final stage.

Sabella, who led Estudiantes to the 2009 Copa Libertadores title as well as the domestic league last year, would replace Sergio Batista as the national team coach.

Argentinian Football Association (AFA) general secretary Jose Luis Meiszner said: "Sabella is the chosen one. The decision has been made."

Talks

AFA president Julio Grondona has confirmed talks to appoint Sabella are now at an 'advanced stage'.

"Negotiations are advanced. The Committee liked the job he has done in his coaching and assistant roles," he told Radio Rivadavia.

Sabella, 56, who had been set to take over at United Arab Emirates team Al Jazira this summer, already has experience with the Argentina national team having been an assistant to former Albiceleste coach Daniel Passarella.

As a player, Sabella represented the likes of Argentina, River Plate and Estudiantes, as well as English clubs Sheffield United and Leeds.
