South American WC Round-Up

The status quo remained in South America as Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay all drew.

The status quo remained in South America, as the top three - Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay - all drew their latest 2006 World Cup qualifiers.

Brazil and Argentina were both held to scoreless draws against Colombia and Chile respectively while Paraguay drew 1-1 at home to Peru.

Reigning champions Brazil could not muster a way past a stubborn Colombian rearguard in Maceio although both teams suffered from controversial decisions.

Colombia had a goal disallowed on 68 minutes when Mario Yepes was adjudged to be offside, despite appearing to have timed his run to perfection.

Even more disputed was Brazil's 'disallowed' goal two minutes later when Adriano's shot crashed off the underside of the bar and bounced clearly over the line but the strike was not awarded.

Argentina were indebted to their goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri for claiming a point from their trip to Chile.

Abbondanzieri made a string of important saves to keep the hosts at bay, although Chile could easily have had Luis Fuentes and Milovan Mirosevic sent off for reckless tackles.

Aston Villa winger Nolberto Solano rescued a point for Peru as he scored a 74th minute penalty against Paraguay.

The hosts had earlier taken the lead in the 28th minute courtesy of Carlos Paredes and the point leaves Paraguay in third behind Brazil and Argentina.
