Didier Deschamps: Two-year contract takes him up to the 2014 World Cup

Didier Deschamps claims guiding France to the 2014 World Cup is his sole focus at present and says he will walk away if he fails to deliver.

Following Laurent Blanc's departure from the national post at the end of Les Bleus' Euro 2012 campaign, Deschamps has been charged with the task of guiding the country forward.

As a World Cup winner from his playing days, and having forged quite a coaching reputation during spells at Monaco, Juventus and Marseille, he would appear to be the ideal candidate to bring stability back to a squad which continues to shoot itself in the foot.

Deschamps has expressed a desire to see his players behave better when involved with the national side, following further misdemeanours at this summer's European Championship, but appreciates that he will be judged on his ability to pick up positive results.

For now, that means securing qualification for the 2014 World Cup, with his contract set to take him through to the next global gathering in Brazil.

"It will be difficult, but we will do everything to achieve our goal," said Deschamps.

Determination

"The first important thing is to qualify for the 2014 World Cup. I want a team that has control, is effective in both areas of the pitch and is exposed on the least number of occasions.

"The team must be clear in their desire and strong in determination.

"There will be a guiding principle, but with different options. Whatever the system, a team must be able to come forward and cause problems for the opponent.

"After that, everything depends of course on the opponent, but in terms of personal investments, there are obligations."

Asked if he would have preferred to have penned a longer contract, allowing him to plan further ahead, Deschamps added: "No. Even if the president gave me four years, if I failed I would be gone."
