Spain coach Inaki Saez has drafted Joan Capdevila into his Euro 2004 squad after opting not to gamble on the fitness of Michel Salgado.

The Real Madrid full back suffered a minor tear to his hamstring in training on Tuesday and was ruled out for up to a fortnight.

Salgado's absence would have kept him out of Saez's plans for the first two fixtures at the European Championship.

But Saez has decided to dispense with the right back's services completely and given a surprise call to Deportivo La Coruna's Capdevila.

The full back's club colleague Manuel Pablo had been tipped to replace Salgado but Saez has plumped for the less experienced Capdevila.

He has only three Spanish caps to his name, the latest of which was in a friendly in March, but will now aim to press his claims for a starting spot in Portugal.

Capdevila's call for Salgado is the only alteration to the initial 23-man squad which Saez announced almost two weeks ago.

Squad: Iker Casillas (Real Madrid), Santiago Canizares (Valencia), Daniel Aranzubia (Athletic Bilbao); Carlos Marchena (Valencia), Carles Puyol, Gabri (Barcelona), Raul Bravo, Ivan Helguera (Real Madrid), Cesar, Joan Capdevila (Deportivo La Coruna), Juanito (Real Betis); David Albelda, Ruben Baraja, Vicente (Valencia), Joaquin (Real Betis), Juan Carlos Valeron (Deportivo La Coruna), Xabi Alonso (Real Sociedad), Xavi (Barcelona), Joseba Etxeberria (Athletic Bilbao); Fernando Morientes (Monaco), Raul (Real Madrid), Fernando Torres (Atletico Madrid), Albert Luque (Deportivo La Coruna).
