Miroslav Klose has withdrawn from the Germany squad to face Switzerland on Wednesday.
The Werder Bremen striker injured his thumb in Sunday's Bundesliga loss to Schalke but had still declared himself fit for the friendly international in Dusseldorf.
A training ground fall on Tuesday, however, further aggravated the injury and has forced Klose to return to Bremen for treatment.
The news is a bitter blow to Germany boss Joachim Low, who is already without Klose's World Cup striking partner Lukas Podolski through suspension.
Wolfsburg's Mike Hanke, recalled Schalke forward Kevin Kuranyi and debutant Mario Gomez from Stuttgart will now vie for the starting roles up front.
