German coach Jurgen Klinsmann had glowing praise for Lukas Podolski after the Cologne youngster claimed a hat-trick in Germany's defeat of South Africa in Bremen on Wednesday.

The 2006 World Cup hosts put the disappointment of Saturday's friendly defeat to Slovakia behind them, with Podolski the chief architect of a 4-2 success.

"Lukas Podolski put on a gala show this evening - we are really proud of him," said Klinsmann.

"It just shows that we were right to leave him out for a game - we are simply concentrating on getting things right for the World Cup."

Marcell Jansen, the 19-year-old left back from Borussia Monchengladbach, who was making only his second international appearance, also found favour with Klinsmann.

He added: "Marcell Jansen had a decent game against Slovakia but he went a step further tonight."
