Hosts Germany got their Confederations Cup campaign off to a winning start with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Australia in Frankfurt.
Australia twice came from behind to draw level at half time before Germany finally overpowered the visitors.
Germany broke the deadlock on 17 minutes when Kevin Kuranyi fired them in front.
The lead proved short-lived as Australia hit back four minutes later through Josip Skoko.
Germany restored their lead less than two minutes later when youngster Per Mertesacker netted.
Australia refused to lie down and former Coventry striker John Aloisi drew them level again just past the half hour mark.
Germany made it 3-2 on the hour when Bayern Munich star Michael Ballack converted from the penalty spot.
Lukas Podolski added a fourth two minutes from time and although Aloisi pulled a goal back in stoppage time Germany held on for the victory.
The win lifts them top of Group A on goal difference ahead of Argentina, who beat Tunisia earlier in the day.
