Italy fear key defender Alessandro Nesta will not be fit for their World Cup second round tie.

Nesta appeared to hurt his groin during Italy's 2-0 victory over Czech Republic which sealed top spot in Group E.

The Milan stopper was replaced in the first half by Marco Materazzi and will undergo a scan on Friday to examine the damage.

But Italy's team doctor Enrico Castellacci was pessimistic about the chances of Nesta being fit for Monday's clash with the runners-up from Group F.

"He suffered a relapse of the problem he had in the past," Castellacci told Sky Italia.

"On Friday he will undergo scans and we will see.

"Certainly, it's difficult doing a prognosis now and I think his presence for the next match is difficult, too."

Azzurri keeper Gianluigi Buffon was never severely stretched by the Czech attack and believes the team should fear no one in the knockout stage.

Buffon said: "I didn't do any difficult stops, but I made many stops.

"I liked the team's spirit. It's useless denying it - in matches in which we are called on to give our best, we are ready to compact ourselves like a big side.

"The next opponents? I think we can overcome anyone."
