Italy batter sorry Germany

Italy outlined their World Cup intentions with a stunning 4-1 win over tournament hosts Germany.

The Azzurri were electric all evening and by the interval were three goals to the good courtesy of strikes from Alberto Gilardino, Luca Toni and Daniele De Rossi.

Juventus playmaker Alessandro Del Piero added Italy's fourth before Chelsea's Robert Huth found the net to hand his side scant consolation.

Germany were without quality or fight throughout and it was no surprise when after just four minutes Gilardino snapped up a rebound, before setting up Toni for Italy's second three minutes later.

Midfielder De Rossi headed in Camoranesi's cross to make it three before the break but it was Italy that again broke the second half's deadlock when Del Piero headed in from close range.

Huth had the final say eight minutes from time, but on this showing, it is Italy that have by far the greater chance of glory this summer.
