Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon will miss the next three months with a shoulder injury.

Buffon collected the injury in Sunday's friendly with Milan after colliding with Brazil international Kaka.

He was forced to withdraw from the Italy squad for Wednesday's game against Republic of Ireland with the problem.

Italian champions Juve were initially hoping the injury was not serious but tests have shown Buffon will be out for at least three months.

"The definitive prognosis will be made after the operation but it is already possible to consider a period of three months before he returns to action," read a Juve statement.

Buffon's injury will be a massive blow to both Juve and Italy, with the Bianconeri likely to rely on veteran shot-stopper Antonio Chimenti for the next three months.

On the international front, Azzurri coach Marcello Lippi will choose between Morgan De Sanctis and Flavio Roma for Italy's final four World Cup qualifiers.
