Three people fined after photo of Dutch players draws racist abuse

Three people have been fined by Dutch prosecutors after posting racist comments online in reaction to a selfie featuring nine members of the national team.

Queen’s Park Rangers midfielder Leroy Fer posted the photograph, featuring eight black players together with former Manchester City defender Karim Rekik - who has a Tunisian father – on Instagram last November.

The picture, which was taken by PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay, drew a string of racist remarks when it was reposted on a Facebook page.

The three men have been fined 360 euros each for the comments and will face court action should they refuse to pay.

Fer welcomed the fines calling them "a clear signal to everybody that this kind of thing can't happen. Not on the field or off it."

Netherlands captain and Manchester United striker Robin van Persie said: "We all represent the Netherlands and colour plays no role."
