Group G round-up

Holland remain in control of Group G thanks to a late win in Slovenia.

Holland remain in control of Group G thanks to a late win in Slovenia, on a night when Romania beat Luxembourg and Bulgaria drew with Albania.

The Dutch started the evening with a three-point cushion and they persevered that, but only just.

Slovenia frustrated the Oranje for long periods, but Giovanni van Bronkhorst popped up with the winner five minutes from time.

The Barcelona defender is a rare goalscorer, but he slammed home from 25 yards to secure victory, although his shot took a couple of deflections.

Romania capitalised on Bulgaria's failure to beat Albania by taking care of Luxembourg to move second behind Holland.

Bulgaria had high hopes of moving onto 11 points themselves, but they were held at home and this allowed Romania to take advantage.

Adrian Mutu fired Romania ahead on 26 minutes, shooting low into the net following a clever pass from Ianis Zicu.

The expected flood of goals failed to materialise and it was not until 56 minutes that they made the game safe, with Cosmin Contra netting following a driving run.

Luxembourg conceded again in the dying moments, with Ciprian Marica putting some gloss on the scoreline with a late third.

Albania dealt a huge blow to Bulgaria's hopes of reaching Euro 2008 when claiming a 0-0 draw in Sofia.

Bulgaria came into the game unbeaten from four games and with high hopes of reinforcing their position in Group G.

However, they were frustrated from the outset as Albania proved to be stubborn opponents.

Bulgaria laid siege to the Albania goal towards the end of the contest, but keeper Arjan Beqaj refused to be beaten as the visitors claimed their third point in qualifying.
