Netherlands coach Marco van Basten has revealed that he attempted to persuade Jaap Stam to come out of international retirement.
Van Basten whittled his pre-squad down to 28 on Monday and his defence does have an inexperienced look to it.
It would appear that van Basten was aware of this, as he made a bid to persuaded Ajax-bound star Stam to make himself available before he picked up an injury.
"I called him at the time of the games with Barcelona and asked him to think about it," van Basten told Studio Voetbal.
"I had hopes, but he indicated that his decision of two years ago to stop playing international football still stood."
Stam is currently rehabilitating following a shoulder injury and will concentrate his efforts on being fit for the start of next term with Ajax, having opted to move on from Milan.
