Group one round-up

Czech Republic climbed back up to second in Group One with a comfortable 4-1 win over Armenia, while the Netherlands hammered Andorra 4-0.

Romania's win over Czech Republic at the weekend moved them second behind the Netherlands, but the switch was short-lived as Karel Bruckner's men proved too strong for Armenia.

Armenia came out in determined mood and worked hard to keep the scores level at the interval.

The Czechs came out with renewed purpose after the break and Marek Heinz lifted their spirits with the opener on 48 minutes.

The goal sparked the Czechs into action and Jan Polak doubled the advantage shortly afterwards.

Aston Villa new boy Milan Baros got in on the act on 58 minutes and Polak put some gloss on the scoreline with a strike 14 minutes from time.

Armenia deserve great credit for battling to the end and their persistence was rewarded with a consolation from Ara Hakobian four minutes from time.

Bruckner's charges are now two points above Romania in second place and, more importantly, have a game in hand.

Marco van Basten's Dutch were confidently expected to brush aside Andorra and so it proved as they eased to a 4-0 win.

Rafael van der Vaart opened the scoring with a sublime lob on ten minutes, with the second coming from the unfortunate boot of Antonio Lima who turned a Philip Cocu header into his own net.

Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is in a rich vein of form he netted on 42 and 89 minutes and also missed a penalty as the Netherlands cruised to victory despite seeing Cocu dismissed for an off the ball incident.

Mikael Forssell netted a hat-trick as Finland overcame FYR Macedonia 5-1.

The Finns' hopes of qualification had already ebbed away, but they put on a show for their fans - with Forssell netting twice before the break to stun Macedonia.

Hannu Tihinen was on target before half time, before Macedonia grabbed a lifeline when Goran Maznov netted on 48 minutes.

Andrei Eremenko Jnr struck for Finland on 55 minutes, before Forssell completed his treble just after the hour.
