Ruud van Nistelrooy kept the Netherlands on track for the World Cup.Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy kept the Netherlands on track to reach the World Cup finals with the only goal in a win over Armenia, while Romania beat Czech Republic.
The trip to Armenia was always likely to prove tough as the hosts set about frustrating the Oranje.
A goalless first half led to talk of an upset, but van Nistelrooy came to Marco van Basten's rescue 25 minutes from time - having earlier seen Armenia goalkeeper Roman Berezovski pull off a good save.
Van Nistelrooy showed his predatory instincts when turning and shooting home, having been teed-up by substitute Jan vennegoor of Hesselink.
The victory leaves the Dutch in command of Group One, as Romania beat Czech Republic 2-0.
The Czechs came into the game looking to keep pace with the Dutch, but they surrendered second place to Romania.
Adrian Mutu is looking to resurrect his career following his drugs ban and he proved the hero with a brace of goals.
The Dutch are three points clear of Romania and four clear of Czech Republic and look strong favourites to secure the automatic qualification slot.
Finland's already slim hopes of World Cup qualification look to have disappeared as they drew 0-0 in Andorra.
The Scandinavian nation travelled to Andorra knowing that they need all three points to try and close the already pretty sizeable gap on Holland, Czech Republic and Romania - but they failed to take maximum points.
Finland would have expected to take the points in La Vella, but their all Premiership strike-force of Mikael Forssell and Shefki Kuqi failed to find the back of the next as Koldo Alvarez enjoyed a good day in the Andorran goal.
The point does mean that Andorra climb off the bottom of Group One and above Armenia.
