Sky Bet have installed Martin O'Neill as their odds-on favourite to be the next Republic of Ireland manager following Giovanni Trapattoni's sacking.

The Italian boss has been relieved of his duties after a 1-0 loss in Austria all but ended Ireland's chances of qualifying for the World Cup next summer.

O'Neill was installed as the 5/6 favourite for the job on Wednesday morning with the news widely anticipated and those odds have been backed into 8/15.

Mick McCarthy (12/1), Brian McDermott (14/1) and Roy Keane (16/1) are considered the most likely alternatives, but it is O'Neill who is attracting the majority of the backing.

Sky Bet Football Trader Chris Spicer said: "O'Neill seems the obvious choice given his experience and availability and our punters tend to agree, with all the early money coming for him despite the short odds."
