Ingham backed for NI call up

York boss Nigel Worthington has recommended fellow countryman Michael Ingham for an international recall.

Worthington did not pick goalkeeper Ingham, 32, during his four-year stint in charge of Northern Ireland. Former Manchester United 'keeper Roy Carroll is Northern Ireland's current first choice, with St Johnstone's Alan Mannus, Falkirk's Michael McGovern and Lee Camp, formerly of Nottingham Forest, also in the frame. But after an impressive end to the season which saw York secure Football League survival, Worthington believes Ingham is worthy of a place in Michael O'Neill's squad. "I worked with Michael for the last couple of months of the season and his attitude and performance levels were exceptional and we will be looking for more of the same from him," Worthington told The Press. "Northern Ireland are not blessed with huge numbers of players in all positions so Michael's there, he's done a very good job and he's got experience. "If the manager was to ring me up I would have good things to say about Michael. "On hearing that, some people might say 'well, why didn't you pick him?' "What I would say to that is, at the time, the club was in the Conference and making that step up to international football is huge, so other people were ahead of Michael then. But he's in good nick, has a fantastic attitude and, if he got the call, I would be delighted for him."
