Late Evans penalty spares defeat to Hughes' troops

Manchester City twice battled back from a goal down to claim a 2-2 draw against Stockport County at Edgeley Park. Just two days after progressing to the second qualifying round of the Uefa Cup with a 2-0 second-leg win over EB/Streymur, City were making the short trip to Stockport. Despite a lively first half it finished goalless, although on the plus side for the visitors Tal Ben Haim started his first game in a City shirt along with highly-promising youngster Vladimir Weiss.

County in front

Stockport went in front on 65 minutes when Anthony Pilkington's shot from the corner edge of the six-yard box found a way beyond Kasper Schmeichel. Valeri Bojinov, tasting first-team action for the first time in almost a year, emerged off the bench to level matters when he rose well to guide home Nedum Onuoha's cross, but County regained the lead with just four minutes left through Peter Thompson's close-range effort. With Mark Hughes' side staring defeat in the face it was another substitute who found the back of the net with Ched Evans scoring from the penalty spot in injury-time after he had been bundled over in the box.
