James Chester not in Wales squad for Israel as Sam Vokes returns

Wales have lost defender James Chester for next week’s crucial European Qualifier against Israel.

Chris Coleman had been hoping to include the Hull centre-back, who dislocated his shoulder in January, in his squad for the Group B clash.

But Chester, who has struck up an impressive partnership with skipper Ashley Williams at the heart of the defence in Wales' unbeaten start to qualifying for Euro 2016, has failed to recover in time.

However, Wales manager Coleman has been able to include Sam Vokes for the first time in 12 months after the Burnley striker returned to action following a serious knee injury.

"Danny is one of those players that you enjoy working with," said Coleman. "He has a great mentality, and he gives us something that we don’t otherwise have.

"He’s not just a targetman, he’s much more than that. He’s a huge threat, both aerially and on the ground. It’s good to have him back."

Real Madrid's Gareth Bale, Arsenal's Aaron Ramsey and Liverpool's Joe Allen are all available for the March 28 qualifier in Haifa which pits together the top two sides in the group.

Israel currently head the standings with nine points after winning their opening three games, with Wales a point behind after two wins and two draws from their four matches so far.

Coleman believes the match against Israel is Wales' most significant game for more than 10 years.

"We lost in the play-offs to Russia for Euro 2004 and this is the biggest game since then," he said. "We’re looking forward to it.

"We’ve earned this pressure. We’ve put ourselves in a position where there’s an expectation on us, and we’ve brought that on ourselves in a really positive way."
