European qualifier: Wales to face Andorra on artificial pitch

Wales have confirmed that next week's European qualifier in Andorra will be played on an artificial surface.

UEFA had requested further work on the 3G pitch at Andorra's national stadium in Andorra la Vella ahead of the match on Tuesday, September 9, but have passed the surface as fit for use following another inspection.

Had UEFA officials deemed the venue unsuitable, the European qualifying opener was set to be moved 125 miles south, to Barcelona.

A statement on the Football Association Wales' website read: "Last Friday UEFA announced that more work needed to be done on the new surface before the qualifier can go ahead.

"UEFA believe that if the necessary work has been carried out over the weekend, the game will be played at the stadium. A decision will be made within the next twenty four hours.

"The FAW would like to thank all the supporters making the journey to Andorra next weekend for their patience regarding this matter."

Drawn in Group B alongside Andorra, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Belgium, Cyprus and Israel, the hopes of Chris Coleman's Wales squad will be focused on Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale and Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey.
