Michael Carrick will sit out England's friendly date with Scotland after being forced to withdraw from the squad with an eye infection.

The Manchester United midfielder had been hoping to be capped for a 30th time by his country at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday.

He will, however, form no part of Roy Hodgson's plans after being returned to his club.

The 32-year-old is the second United player to be forced out of the England camp, with Ashley Young having already been laid low with an ankle complaint.

Carrick and Young can now turn their attention to the start of the 2013/14 Premier League season, with United set to travel to Swansea City on Saturday evening - in a fixture which can be seen live on Sky Sports 1 HD.
