England captain Steven Gerrard says he is 'fit and fine' for Tuesday's game against Ukraine after being taken off at half-time in the 5-0 win over Moldova.

Gerrard was replaced at the interval in Moldova, with England leading 3-0 following Frank Lampard's brace and Jermain Defoe's goal.

The Liverpool midfielder confirmed after the opening 2014 World Cup qualifier that he was substituted by coach Roy Hodgson simply to have a rest.

"I hope so," Gerrard told Sky Sports when asked if he went off at half-time just to rest.

"There are no problems at all, I'm fit and fine."

Gerrard praised England's performance against Moldova which sets the team up perfectly for a more difficult test against Ukraine at Wembley on Tuesday night.

He added: "I think when you come up against nations like this, ideally you want to finish the game by half-time.

"Sometimes they make it difficult and put a lot of men behind the ball but I thought we pressed them really high, won the ball high up and we were lethal in front of goal."
