Three Lions boss surprised by Redknapp's sacking

England manager Roy Hodgson voiced his surprise following Harry Redknapp's sacking by Tottenham and says he has contacted the former boss to express his sympathy. Spurs parted ways with Redknapp on Thursday in a surprise move after the manager led the club to a top-four Premier League finish, with the North Londoners only missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification after Chelsea won this season's final. The 65-year-old, who transformed Spurs' fortunes after taking over in 2008, leading them into the Champions League on his first full season in charge, was the favourite with bookmakers to replace Fabio Capello as England boss before Hodgson was appointed.

Sad

The England manager said: "I was very sad to hear the news. I texted Harry this afternoon. I don't expect a reply because I expect he will be snowed under with sympathetic messages. "It came as a major surprise to me and I'm disappointed for him. "I can only wish him all the best and hope the next job he wants comes along very soon and he will be happy in that job. "I'm not in a position to comment on the decision Spurs have made and had no chance to speak to Harry to find out how he feels about it."
