Villa striker sidelined after suffering ankle injury at Wigan

Aston Villa striker Darren Bent has been ruled out of England's friendly with Holland next week. Bent landed awkwardly after a challenge from Wigan's Antolin Alcaraz during the goalless Premier League draw at the DW Stadium on Saturday. Villa boss Alex McLeish confirmed after the match the forward would not be linking up with his country next week and would undergo a scan to determine any damage in the next 48 hours. "He was in a bit of agony in the dressing room," said McLeish. "Going by his reaction it seems serious. You never know if it settles down in the next 24 hours or so, or even Monday when he can get a scan. "He is flinching and a bit nauseous, he has gone over on it and is in some pain. "The pitch was quite heavy and I think he has landed badly on it."

On England, McLeish added:"He will be out. He might be in a lot of pain now but we will see what the scans bring. "I'd say he'll certainly be out of the England squad." Injured players are normally required to report for international duty to be checked on by England's doctors - but McLeish hopes that is not the case. He added: "I'd hope a bit of common sense will be applied on this one. "The club doctor has a good relationship with the England medical team. Whether Benty has to report? He will certainly limp into HQ."
