Sir Trevor Brooking is hoping England will be placed in a group alongside one of the host nations in Friday's draw for the Euro 2012 finals.
Fabio Capello's men have been seeded in pot two for the draw in Kiev, which you can follow on Sky Sports from 4.30pm.
England will therefore face either reigning champions Spain, a formidable Holland side ranked second in the world, Poland or Ukraine.
There are also some dangerous teams in pots three and four, and a nightmare scenario could pit the Three Lions against Spain, Portugal and France.
FA director of football development Brooking, who also wants to avoid Giovanni Trapattoni's Republic of Ireland, is hoping for a kind draw.
"I'd like to avoid France, who are in one of the lower groups, and also Portugal," he told Sky Sports News.
"At the top you would try and avoid Holland and Spain and try and get one of the hosts.
"I'm sure at home Poland and Ukraine would be difficult, but looking at the rankings and results, naturally Spain and Holland would be two to avoid out of that leading pot."
