Joe Cole won his manager's praise with a first class performance against Uruguay.

The Chelsea man grabbed an injury-time winner to cap an outstanding showing which surely signals the end of England's left-wing woes.

Speaking after the 2-1 win Eriksson had no arguments that Cole was a deserving man-of-the-match, telling the BBC: "I agree Joe Cole was fantastic.

"A couple of years ago you knew that sooner or later he would lose the ball but he is now strong and clever and works hard in his own penalty box as well and I think he was our best player today.

"We don't have any problems on the left of midfield with a player like he has shown he is today. For many games he has been playing very well."

The only shadow hanging over an otherwise bright night for England supporters was the ankle injury suffered by Wayne Bridge.

"They have to do a scan tomorrow and then they will know the seriousness," Eriksson continued.

"Ashley Cole was injured this week and there are many times that when one full-back was injured then straightaway the other was.

"Of course I hope they will both recover because they are both natural full backs."

The Swedish tactician also had encouraging words for Michael Carrick, who may well have booked his place on the flight to Germany with an assured performance in midfield.

He added: "He showed he wants to be in the squad. He had very good game, he was very calm, he kept the ball with long and short passing and never gave away the ball. Congratulations - he did the job."
