Injured Owen in Sven's squad

Sven Goran Eriksson included Michael Owen in his squad for the crucial Euro 2004 decider against Turkey in Istanbul.

The England vice-captain was taken off in Liverpool's 2-1 defeat to Arsenal last week with a shin injury and was pictured on crutches this week.

Wayne Rooney, James Beattie and Emile Heskey are the other three strikers the Swede picked, so there was no place for Darius Vassell, a scorer against Turkey in April.

With Rio Ferdinand omitted after missing recent a drug test, Matthew Upson got the nod over Gareth Southgate at centre back. John Terry, who has started the last two Euro 2004 qualifiers, is expected to partner Sol Campbell in the centre of defence.

Paul Scholes is back in the squad after missing the wins over Slovakia and Liechtenstein, but there is no place for Manchester City winger Trevor Sinclair in the 23-man squad.

The England coach resisted the temptation to recall veteran keeper David Seaman and ignored suggestions he should tempt Alan Shearer out of international retirement.

Jonathan Woodgate and Danny Murphy were not considered because both are injured.

Squad: Robinson, Walker, James; Campbell, A Cole, Upson, Bridge, P Neville, G Neville, Terry, Mills; J Cole, Hargreaves, Lampard, Gerrard, Beckham, Butt, Scholes, Dyer; Rooney, Heskey, Beattie, Owen.
